Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring…and Barbecue!
We’re ‘almost’ at the best season of the year…BBQ season! But is your BBQ ready for those long and glorious sun kissed afternoons?
If no, then check out our favourite top tips and cleaning ideas to get your BBQ grill ready to go, so when the weather does start putting smiles on everyone’s faces, your BBQ will put a smile on yours.
First, heat it up! Before you get started cleaning, especially if it’s been a while since it’s last use, it’s a good idea to actually heat your BBQ, as this will allow it to burn off any stubborn remains before you begin. Just be careful to allow it to cool down sufficiently prior to cleaning.
1. One of the best ways to clean your BBQ grill is with bicarbonate of soda, it’s really good at cutting through grease and crusty, stuck on food, plus it’s often something you already have handy in a kitchen cupboard. Just sprinkle over your grill and then use a scourer with warm water.
2. Vinegar spray is a simple yet effective way to cut through grease. And it’s so simple too, all you need to do is grab a spray bottle and fill it with equal parts vinegar and water, then spray onto your grill and allow it to work it’s magic for 20 minutes or so, then refill with a small amount of neat vinegar and spray again, leave for another 10 minutes then wipe dry.
3. Lemons! What better use for those extra lemons you purchased to go along with your BBQ, than to actually use them to help you clean it afterwards? Just slice them in half and dunk them with salt crystals. It would make sense to have a little heat to assist with this cleaning method, so it’s ideal to do this just as your BBQ has cooled, and then rub and squeeze the lemon halves over your BBQ – the citric acid will cut through grease and the salt will scrub away the dried on food.
4. If you’d like to invest in a grill brush with wire bristles, they can be super helpful when you need some heavy duty cleaning. They generally have a long handle with rough scourer also attached, making cleaning those grills a lot easier to manage. When you’ve tackled the worst then you can clean the grill with a dishcloth and hot soapy water.
5. No grill brush? No problem! Just take a balled up piece of aluminium foil and use that as your bristle brush – it’ll do the job nicely.
6. Another clever idea to clean your BBQ (once it’s cooled down slightly) is to use a wet newspaper. Either soak or spray it with water and use it to cover your grill before closing the lid. Leave it undisturbed for half an hour and the steam will self-clean and save you lots of scrubbing!
7. If you’d rather use a household cleaner, then just be careful that your product isn’t too abrasive for your BBQ, do this by making sure you choose a cleaning product specifically suitable for the job.
8. The next option might sound a little on the strange side..put it in the dishwasher! Well, the grill or hotplate at least. Unless your BBQ is extra large, most average sized BBQ can utilise this fab cleaning aid, just make sure you set to your dishwasher’s most powerful function.
9. If you fancy taking a completely different approach, what about using a pressure washer? Firstly, empty your BBQ free of ash, replace the grate and place your BBQ in the middle of your lawn – it’ll spray everywhere. Then switch on and watch all that grease and food debris disappear before your eyes! Just remember to spray downwards, not up, or you’ll make a bit of a mess.
10. Our last tip today is prevention. Once the season’s begun and you’re regularly using your BBQ, it’s a good idea to give it a quick scrub after each use – it’ll make keeping your BBQ clean, a complete breeze!

Cleanhome (Haywards Heath)
Just to let you know we are open for business as usual and you can continue to have your cleaner clean your house.
The government has made it clear that cleaners are still permitted to work inside peoples' homes as long as Government Guidelines on social distancing and staying safe are followed (see below). In summary:
You can be outside of your home for work purposes where your place of work remains open and where you cannot work from home, including if your job involves working in other people's homes.
The full text can be found here New National Restrictions from 5 January (in England; there are similar texts available for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Specifically relating to cleaners, the guidance continues: 'This guidance applies to those working in, visiting or delivering to home environments. These include, but are not limited to, people working in the following areas:
Note this guidance is for people who are fit and well, and is dependent on the following social distancing guidelines being followed:
The good news with regard to cleaning is that the cleaners can social distance from their clients very easily, and we would advise that, if you are at home when they are there, that you remain in a separate room to your cleaner.
If you are happy to adhere to the government guidelines - and if your cleaner has not been in touch already - then please just call the office and we will ensure that your cleaning continues.
Best regards
The Cleanhome Team
